Board AI Governance Index
An independent, annual benchmark of how governable AI is across industries, and how boards oversee it. The first edition is in preparation, and directors and risk leaders are invited to contribute.
What the Index measures
GovernabilityScores by primitive and sectorResults for the six Bounded Agency primitives, and the distribution of indicative BAL Score™ zones, for banking, insurance, healthcare and the public sector. Self-reported and evidence-tested results are reported separately.
Board practiceHow boards oversee AIHow often AI risk reaches the agenda, which committee owns it, whether the board sees evidence or only policy, and how often AI authority is renewed.
The headline finding compares what boards believe with what the evidence shows.
Who can take part
- Directors serving on boards or risk, audit and technology committees.
- Chief risk officers, chief audit executives and general counsel who brief boards.
- Organizations that complete the free BAL Score™ self-assessment and opt in.
What participants receive
- The full Index report before public release.
- A private comparison of your organization’s scores against its sector, for organizations that take part.
- A director checklist of five questions to put to management.
How your information is protected
- Separate consent. Research use is a separate, optional choice from any commercial assessment. Declining it never affects a result or a service, and consent can be withdrawn at any time.
- De-identified and aggregated. No individual, board or organization is ever named. A minimum group size is set before collection, and smaller groups are suppressed.
- Honest about the sample. Self-reported and evidence-tested results are kept apart, and an opt-in sample is not presented as representative of a whole sector.
- Published method. Sampling, denominators, missing responses, sector mix and methodology versions appear in the report.
- Independent of commercial work. Publication decisions are made by the Foundation, never depend on a client’s result, and take no money from technology vendors.
